Apples at Mercier Orchards

October 16, 2010

After a busy week of work, Allen and I headed up to North Georgia this morning to pick some apples at Mercier Orchards. We took Birch with us and just wandered  the “aisles” of beautiful, natural apples. Apparently, the Pink Lady apples are at their peak right now and, Oh My Goodness… I have never tasted a more delicious apple!

There were so many different types of apples! Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Mutzu, Jonagold, Rome, Braeburn, Cameo, Limbertwig, Fuji, York, Staymen Winesap, and Arkansas Black. Have you ever heard of so many different apples? I had not. They also harvest blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes, anything you can think of, really.

Needless to say, I’ll be trying my hand at creative apple recipes this week: apple pie, apple butter, applesauce, apple cake, apple dumplings.

Pink Lady apples are my VERY favorite! I always get sad when I cannot find them at the store. We are going to have to head up there next weekend! I cannot wait!

I continue to hear that making apple butter in a crockpot is the best way to do it because of the long time it takes to cook. I don’t have a recipe but why not check the ‘net. So yummy on toast!
