Forcing Hyacinths

In October, I put a bunch of bulbs in the refrigerator downstairs. It was going to take 12 weeks to trick them into thinking they were in the thick of a really cold winter. Then we’d bring them into the warm house, set them in a sunny window and really throw them for a loop. They started out like this:

Then sprouted up a little bit of green after about 2 weeks in the sunny window on my desk.
Then, a few weeks more and I had these colorful and delightfully sweet smelling friends greeting me.
